The Prince George Transit Future Plan will envision what the community's transit network should look like 25 years from now. It will describe and prioritize the infrastructure and investment needed to get there.

BC Transit and the City of Prince George are working on the second phase of a 25-year Transit Future Plan.

The network vision was developed using your input (see below) from the first round of public open houses and the valuable contributions from the Transit Future Plan Stakeholder Advisory Group.

The next step is to prioritize transit investments to build the future network.

From your input in the first round we heard a desire for:

  • Many respondents believe transit would play an increasingly more important role in the community over the next 25 years
  • More frequent transit service
  • Service on statutory holidays and improved service on Sundays
  • Using smaller transit vehicles on lower ridership routes to better match demand
  • Express services with more direct routes
  • Respondents suggested the following areas that are not served by the existing transit system should be considered for future expansion of the transit service area including:
    • Blackburn
    • Pineview
    • Prince George Airport
    • Industrial areas
    • Beaverly
  • The use of new technology to improve customer information, such as an online trip planner and real-time next bus information
  • Improvements to transit stop amenities, such as bus shelters, benches and on-street schedule information and maps.

Thanks for the great feedback in our first round of open houses! We had a total of 1,600 people visit the Transit Future bus. The first round of public consultation included:

  • Friday June 29th - A Transit Future Bus media event was held at Fort George Park with Mayor Shari Green and Manuel Achadinha President & CEO of BC Transit. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of the Transit Plan and Bus, and to encourage people to come out on the Canada Day long weekend and visit the bus and provide input into the Transit Future planning process.
  • Saturday June 30th - Transit Future Bus events were held at the transit exchange at Spruce Land Mall in the morning and at the transit exchange at Pine Centre Mall in the afternoon.
  • Sunday July 1st - The Transit Future Bus event was held at Fort George Park during the Canada Day celebration. Over 1,495 people visited the bus on Canada Day which is a new record for attendees at a Transit Future open house event.

Attendees were able to provide feedback directly to BC Transit staff and municipal staff on-board or via an on-board survey and comment board. In total, more than 1,600 visitors were welcomed on-board the bus.

Our next step is to take all your input and develop a vision and implementation plan for the future of transit in Prince George. The next round of consultation is planned for late 2012.

PHASE ONE PUBLIC FEEDBACK HIGHLIGHTS

Public consultation provided many valuable ideas on how to improve the existing transit system. Public feedback received during the "Listening Phase" included the following major themes:

  • Many respondents believe transit would play an increasingly important role in the community over the next 25 years
  • A strong desire for more frequent transit service - several respondents suggested that frequency on major corridors be increased to 15 minutes during peak travel times on weekdays
  • An extension of hours of operation in the evenings and early mornings, particularly on Sundays
  • The provision of transit service on statutory holidays
  • Consideration should be given to using smaller transit vehicles on lower ridership routes to better match demand
  • The provision of express services with more direct routes
  • Respondents suggested the following areas that are not served by the existing transit system should be considered for future expansion of the transit service area including:

    Blackburn Pineview
    Prince George Airport Industrial areas
    Beaverly  

  • The use of new technology to improve customer information, such as an online trip planner and real-time next bus information
  • Improvements to transit stop amenities, such as bus shelters, benches and on-street schedule information and maps
  • Many respondents noted that they appreciate the existing transit services and perceive the transit fares to be reasonable and noted that the operators were courteous

June 18th 2012

Stakeholder Advisory Group

A stakeholder advisory group was formed to ensure key interest groups were included in the decision making process. The role of the group is to provide open, honest and constructive feedback, and act as the liaison between their organization and BC Transit. The groups invited to participate consists of major institutions, community groups, business groups, residential associations, local government staff and Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure staff.

An initial stakeholder advisory group meeting was held on June 18, 2012. The topics covered in the initial meeting included the Transit Future Plan process and a review of relevant local plans, such as the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, Official Community Plan, as well as future demographic trends, the existing transit system. The stakeholder group also provided input into the development of the project vision and goals (See meeting stakeholder meeting minutes for details). The group will likely meet two more times during the planning process and the topics to be covered will include the development of the future transit network and the implementation strategy.
