How to use Your Transit System

Fares

You may pay with cash (exact coin fare only, drivers carry no change), ticket or one of the types of pass available in your community, including BC Bus Pass and CNIB Pass, where available.

Transfers

Transfers are proof of payment that tells the transit operator you have paid your fare. A transfer allows a passenger to use more than one bus for a period of up to 60 minutes. When you pay your fare, ask your transit operator for a transfer.

If you need to use more than one bus to complete your trip and are using cash or tickets as fare payment, you will need a transfer to board the connecting bus.

Please show your transfer to the driver, face up, with time showing.

Transfer Policies

  • Transfers are issued only at time you pay your fare. This is your proof of payment, so keep it for your entire trip.
  • Show your transfer clearly to the driver every time you get on board.
  • Your transfer is valid on any route on the date of issue and allows transfers, including return trips, for a period of up to 60 minutes.
  • Your transfer will expire at the time torn on the front of the transfer.
  • Transfers are not transferable to anyone other than the person who purchased the transfer.
  • Transfers are not valid as fare payment at the Swartz Bay ferry terminal bus stop.

Boarding the Bus

  • You may board only at designated stops, via the front door of the bus
  • Have your fare ready when you board the bus, and display your entire Monthly or DayPASS to the driver.

Bus Seating Priority

Accessible seating on the bus is prioritized to best meet the needs of all transit customers. Your courtesy and understanding in sharing the accessible resources on the bus is appreciated. The priorities are as follows:

  1. Customers who use wheelchairs, scooters, or other mobility aids.
  2. Elderly customers and customers with disability or mobility issues.
  3. Customers with strollers.

On the Bus

  • Please remain seated or hold onto one of the stanchions when the bus is in motion. Do not put your arms or elbows out of the window.
  • You may not carry combustible materials such as wet-cell batteries or gasoline containers on the bus.
  • To request a stop, pull the bell cord, being sure to allow the driver enough time to stop safely.

Getting off the Bus

  • Exit by the rear door when possible.
  • After leaving the bus, wait until the bus pulls away and you have a clear view of any on-coming traffic before crossing the street.

Baby Strollers

Accessible low-floor buses allow easier access for customers travelling with babies in strollers, when space allows. The stroller can be wheeled onto the bus with the child in the stroller. Once on board the customer can:

  1. Remove the child from the stroller, fold the stroller and store it clear of the aisle between the seats.
  2. Allow the child to remain in the stroller and position the stroller in an unoccupied wheelchair location. The stroller's brakes should be set, but the restraining straps are not required.

The parent or guardian is responsible at all times for the stroller and child during the trip and is required to hold onto the stroller at all times.

Strollers must be kept clear of the aisles (the aisle is considered to be the width of the distance between the normal seats, not the width of the accessible area.)

Strollers MUST be collapsible. When the wheelchair positions are required by another customer using a wheelchair or scooter: the customer should fold the stroller, move to another available seat and store the stroller between the seats.

Lost and Found

If you lose something on a bus, call Lost and Found at 995-5637, or complete the online lost and found form. If you find something on the bus, give it to the transit driver, who will deliver it to Lost & Found.

Lost articles may be claimed during the hours of 8am to 7pm, seven days a week at 520 Gorge Road E. Lost and found is located on the lower level of the building. You can only access it from the outside. To get there from the BC Transit parking lot, look to the left of the main entrance to a set of stairs. Go down the stairs, walk past the bike cage and open the first door on your right. Lost and Found is directly to your left.

BC Transit keeps lost articles for up to 30 days. If you call us and we have the article, we will hold it for a maximum of seven days. All unclaimed articles go to charitable organisations.

Bike Lockers

Bike Lockers are available at McTavish Park & Ride and at the Juan de Fuca Exchange. For information, please contact the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition at 480-5155.
