Gordon Head and Cadboro Bay
Community Bus Service Proposal

public transit consultation

In response to community requests for new transit services in Cadboro Bay area, BC Transit has examined service options and prepared a route feasibility report. The report identifies a pair of routes which would operate between University Heights, UVIC, Sinclair Village and Wedgewood Estates using community buses (vans).

The proposal has been presented to the Community Associations in Cadboro Bay and Gordon Head. A very active public meeting was held in June regarding the proposal and many comments have been received both for and against the proposal.

Persons opposed to the proposal have cited the following reasons:

  1. Streets (San Juan, Cedar Hill, Kenmore, Arbutus) are inappropriate for transit use
  2. Existing transit services are sufficient for the neighbourhood need
  3. There is not enough demand for the new services and money would be better spent elsewhere
  4. Bus stops will interfere with parking or home environment

Persons in support of the proposal have cited:

  1. Wedgewood Hill is difficult to walk and closer transit access is needed
  2. Direct service to UVIC and schools and shops from Gordon Head is desired
  3. Elderly people will benefit most from the proposal
  4. Service on Cedar Hill Road brings transit closer to more people

We have also received several messages from Ten Mile Point area requesting that this area be included in the service proposal.

Over the summer, BC Transit will be preparing its final report on the proposal. It is anticipated that this report will be presented to the Victoria Regional Transit Commission at its October meeting.

An update will be available through this web page by the end of September with a copy of a revised report and confirmation of the Commission meeting date and time and delegation procedures.

We are continuing to collect comments on the proposal. If you wish, please fill out a comment sheet.
